This winter the Chicago Human Rhythm Project (CHRP) will welcome students and performers to its annual Winter Tap JAMboree, featuring master classes and Tap Scholarship Auditions at the American Rhythm Center, a collaborative arts space housed in the historic Fine Arts Building in downtown Chicago. Additionally, a Tap JAM performance, open to the public, will take place at a venue to be determined. The upcoming showcase and workshop will offer students an opportunity to receive coaching from acclaimed artists Ayodele Casel and Sarah Savelli, who recently appeared in Savion Glover’s exhilarating live stage tap show STePz in New York City. (STePz will make its way to Chicago’s Harris Theater January 24th as part of The Harris’ 10th Year Anniversary Season.) Also on the faculty for the upcoming Tap JAMboree will be some of Chicago’s finest tap artists, including CHRP founder and director Lane Alexander, Starinah Dixon and Brill Barrett. As part of the program, CHRP is offering up to $10,000 in tuition awards to dancers between the ages of 12 and 18 who compete in its annual Tap Scholarship Auditions Saturday, January 25 at 7 p.m. at the American Rhythm Center. These scholarships will make it possible for deserving young tap dancers to attend CHRP’s annual Rhythm World festival, the popular tap celebration bringing together more than 25 master teachers/performers from around the globe each summer in Chicago. Rhythm World takes place July 7-August 3, 2014. Classes for teens and adults are to take place Saturday, January 25 and Sunday, January 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the American Rhythm Center. The JAMboree is all part of CHRP’s vision is to establish the first global center for American tap and percussive arts, through which it hopes to create a complete ecosystem of education, performance, creation and community in a state-of-the-art facility uniting generations of diverse artists and the general public.
