From April 10 through April 12 Currently in his second season as music director of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Grams was recently announced as Conductor of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras in recognition for exemplary achievements.
Grams was selected as the new music director for the Elgin Symphony Orchestra in June 2013 after a two-year, international search that saw more than 200 applicants apply for the position. The ESO recently announced its ‘15-‘16 season, which will feature renowned cellist Lynn Harrell and actor Damon Gupton. The music of American composers will be highlighted at each concert and Grams will conduct on seven concert weekends.
A Maryland native, Andrew Grams began conducting at the age of 17, when he directed the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan. In 1999 he received a bachelor of music degree in violin performance from the Juilliard School, and in 2003 he received a conducting degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, where he worked with Otto-Werner Mueller.
Recognized as one of America’s most promising and talented young conductors, Grams has already appeared with many of the great orchestras around the globe.
Also an accomplished violinist, Grams was a member of the New York City Ballet Orchestra at Lincoln Center from 1998 to 2004, serving as acting associate principal second violin in 2002 and 2004. In addition, he has performed with ensembles including the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and the New Jersey Symphony.
On his first season as music director of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Grams notes,“’Your day, your outlook, your spirit will be Transformed by Music.’ I love that quote and use it often. In the last twelve months, I have conducted orchestras in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and many places in the United States including Pasadena, California; Birmingham, Alabama; Jacksonville, Florida; and others. In each of these venues, I was suddenly more than Andrew Grams, Guest Conductor. I was Andrew Grams, Music Director of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, appearing as Guest Conductor. It is with tremendous pride that I promote this great community and orchestra wherever I travel.”
