Clef Notes Chicagoland Journal for the Arts
On Friday, November 3, the College of DuPage (COD) will showcase works by COD students and dance faculty in the 2017 Fall Dance Fusion at the McAninch Arts Center(MAC). The varied program will feature an entertainingly diverse selection of dance styles ranging from hip-hop, to ballet, and from musical theater to jazz.
“This year's Fall Dance Fusion includes works by four creative student choreographers who have all choreographed at COD before,” says COD dance faculty member Jon Sloven. “It’s been inspiring to see how their artistic voices have grown and how they are all willing to take chances to express themselves. In addition, there are four new faculty creations, students from the Summer Showcase get a chance to perform again on larger stage expanding their performances, and a Dance Film that was created, edited and danced entirely by COD students will be screened. This show is not to be missed!”
The works created by student choreographers Rachel Ehret, Miranda Gentile, Kristopher Knighton and Renata Naomi and COD dance faculty will be performed by a company featuring more than 30 COD dance students. The program also includes works created COD Dance Faculty Elise Cowin, Mary Read and Jon Sloven. Featured guest Naperville’s own Dance West Ballet will perform excerpts from Paquita, a ballet originally staged in 1847 in Russia for the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg with choreography by the legendary Marius Petipa.
Also on the MAC’s dance calendar is tap legend and Tony Award-winning choreographer Savion Glover in a performance of “All Funk’d Up!” on Sunday, November 26 at 4 p.m. In advance of the performance, Glover conduct a master class earlier that day at Noon at the COD Dance Studio located in the campus’ PE Building. This 90-minute master class will allow dancers to learn technique and styles as performed by the acclaimed artist. Admission is free but capacity is limited and advance registration is required. Registration requests will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. To register: email Janey Sarther firstname.lastname@example.org.
