The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago has announced "Howardena Pindell: What Remains To Be Seen" has won the 2018 George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award. Naomi Beckwith and Cassel Oliver were presented with the 2018 George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award at a private ceremony during the annual ARLIS/NA conference on March 28, 2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The comprehensive catalogue accompanied the exhibition of the same name held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2018. Co-curated by Naomi Beckwith, Manilow Senior Curator at the MCA, and Valerie Cassel Oliver, VMFA Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, the exhibition was the first major survey of Pindell's five-decades-long career. The book—edited by Beckwith and Cassel Oliver and published by the MCA and Prestel—features essays by the co-curators, along with contributions from artists, art historians and curators, as well as a selection of texts by Pindell and full-color reproductions of the artist's work.
Naomi Beckwith says, "As an artist, writer, researcher, curator, and activist, Pindell's capacious and ongoing life's work is a daunting project to capture in a single volume. I'm so grateful to the discerning Wittenborn committee for considering our work worthy of Pindell's remarkable career and that they recognize the love we poured into this book."
The George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award is given annually and honors the memory of George Wittenborn, an art book dealer and publisher who championed the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) in its foundational years."Howardena Pindell: What Remains To Be Seen" is available at the MCA Store at www.mcachicagostore.org
